Well, as luck would have it, my main blog site went down this weekend. So I started this one instead. I will get more detail added through the week.
In February, I went to Haiti, planning to build a soccer field for my Bar Mitzvah Project. I then met with Pere Jeanot, community leader in the town of Mirebalais. While excited about the possibility of building a soccer field, he told about his 20 year old goal; that was to build a youth orchestra for his school. Ecole St. Pierre is a school in Mirebalais with about 900 students, about the same size as my school. When I heard this idea, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me because I am so into music. The teachers and students are very excited about this. When I told them yes, they immediately started a music theory program, to prepare the students. It is my plan to supply used instruments, supplies (music stands, sheet music, rosin, bows…,) and the money to pay for the music teacher salaries. My hope is to teach them to care for instruments, instrument repairs, and to supply their own music. Finally, over time the project should become self-sustaining by doing concerts, making cd’s etc.
I really appreciate all of your support. I know it is very hard to give up your money to this cause. I will make sure to keep you up to date on my progress with stories, pictures, and videos so you know where your money is going. I thank you so much for trusting me, and giving the Haitian kids a chance to play music!
